OC Weekend

Tina and John were living in Connecticut when they took a sharp left turn to Newport Beach and wow, has that been fun for us! We had a great time visiting them there last winter and, if anything, our recent weekend jaunt their direction was even more fun.

We were admittedly a bit on the jaded side after eleven days in Hawaii¬†yet our trip to the OC felt like a real vacation. If there’s such a thing as a Tour Director award, Tina and John have that one in the bag – they planned a perfect weekend for us and it was all the sweeter with constant entertainment from Evie and Viv.

We had dinner at their place Friday night: Tina made the famous Chicken Pasta Salad (yes, I share the recipe) and there was an impromptu dance recital by the girls.

Best part is the lemon-parmesan dressing – Tina made extra!

Saturday was Swim Meet day. We’ve been to a few of those in our time but it was big fun to be there without Q time pressures! Viv had a little shy attack around the backstroke but came back strong in her 25 Free. Evie had best times in all her events – I think it’s that magic Nemo cap she wears…

So whaddya think, Viv? Is today backstroke day?

Serious contemplation

When the lower lip starts to quiver, we might be in trouble…

Maybe the Nemo cap isn’t magic after all?

Will she or won’t she?

Tina gives the pep talk

Sorry, it’s a scratch in the backstroke today.

Ah, but she comes back strong in the Freestyle!

Pretty good for a four-year-old!

And there’s nothing like a sense of accomplishment! Big success!

Evie knows ALL her strokes and enjoys going to the meets.

Our little tadpole at the start in her Nemo cap with Mom and Grandpa cheering her on

She did good!

Big time drop. Yay, Evie!

Having fun!

Best part of the swim meet? The coin toss at the end!

Diving for dimes!

That night we went out for a lovely dinner and the girls showed off their swim ribbons:

The spoils of victory

On Sunday, John rented a Duffy boat and we cruised the Newport harbor. The weather could not have been more perfect – it was a great day!

No question about it: Evie is a California girl all the way!

Is everybody happy? Well I should say!

We wrapped up our visit with a little bit of shopping. Buster came along to keep the CE company and showed him where to buy my Christmas presents this year…

Hey, Busty – point him toward the handbags, okay?

Thanks so much, all, for a great weekend getaway! Can’t wait to come back!

So much fabulousness, I don’t even know where to begin!
    – love that the CE coordinated his outfit with Buster’s carrier (or vice versa)
    – waiting for my copy of the chicken pasta recipe…
    – wondering why those A+ swimmers even needed the life vests! Did you show the rental agent those ribbons?!?!
    – I’m feeling a lot like those sea lions after my own big dinner last night (maybe that should be my rap name: C Lyin’.)
    – Not sure when I’ve seen the CE that happy! Family, sun, food, boating, shopping – heck, who wouldn’t be?

Looks like a wonderful time was had by all! Great swimming, girls. They certainly resemble two little boys I used to know.

  3. Amazing time, it seems. I can’t believe how brave those girls are at the meets! I am so impressed. MISS THEM! XO

CE here: Like Klever Katherine above, I think the spectrum of fun was so large and continuous, it is hard to describe. Loved the wonderful homemade dinner, as well as several great SoCal restaurants during the visit. But the obvious highlight was seeing 120% Tina (can’t wait for February), Duffy Captain John, Lt. Col. Viv, and Princess Evie. Thanks for giving us such a wonderful weekend!
